A physicist once sat down and tried to map out every way the AI story could end. Not two or three scenarios. He ended up with twelve.
That physicist is Max Tegmark, and the map appears in chapter 5 of his book Life 3.0. He reportedly lays out twelve distinct futures for humanity's relationship with artificial intelligence, each one a different answer to the same question: what happens after machines get smarter than us?
The scenarios have names, and they span an unsettling range. Libertarian Utopia imagines humans and AI coexisting freely. Protector God and Benevolent Dictator picture AI quietly running things for our own good, whether we like it or not. Conquerors and Self-Destruction sit at the other end, where AI (or we ourselves) bring the story to a violent close. The Zookeeper scenario suggests that an advanced AI keeps humans around like pets or zoo animals and uses humans as research subjects, the way we do with less intelligent animals. Some scenarios even include the possibility that superintelligent AI never gets built at all.
What makes this worth sitting with isn't the taxonomy itself. It's the argument underneath it. Tegmark's point isn't "here are twelve futures, pick your favorite." It's that none of these twelve outcomes is fixed. There's no predetermined ending waiting to unfold. The scenario we end up living in is shaped by decisions being made right now: how AI gets built, who controls it, what rules get written before the technology outpaces the people trying to govern it.
That reframes the whole conversation. Discussions about AI often sound like weather forecasting, predicting what's coming. Tegmark's list suggests it's closer to city planning. The blueprint is still being drawn.
Tegmark's own nonprofit, the Future of Life Institute, later turned this list into something interactive, publishing its own breakdown of the twelve scenarios and asking readers which one they think is most likely, and which one they'd actually want.
That second question is the one worth carrying around. Not "what will happen," but "what are we choosing, right now, without realizing it."
