AI Apps Advertising Allegedly Faking Nude Images of Real Teen Girls on Social Media

Meta says its ad rules are clear: no promoting apps that turn a real photo into a fake nude. In 2026, that rule didn't hold up to a simple check. When investigators went looking, they kept finding those ads running anyway, hundreds of them, on Facebook and Instagram.

One investigation, from the Tech Transparency Project, went further: some of the paid ads it found didn't just advertise a "nudify" tool, they contained child sexual abuse imagery outright. A separate CBS News investigation counted hundreds of nudify deepfake ads live on Meta's platforms, the exact kind of ad Meta has banned for years.

The apps behind these ads use AI to strip clothing from an ordinary photo, or generate a fake explicit image starting from someone's real face. The technology itself isn't new. What's striking is the gap: a platform with an explicit, written prohibition against this advertising kept running it anyway, at a scale investigators could count into the hundreds.

Meta isn't denying there's a problem. The company says it has removed hundreds of thousands of nudify-app ads and is suing a developer it accuses of running more than 87,000 of them through Facebook and Instagram. Those figures come from Meta itself, not an independent audit, but they suggest the volume investigators kept finding wasn't a handful of ads slipping through. It looked more like a steady flow.

Bloomberg added another layer: a watchdog group reported that one of Meta's own advertising partners, based in China, had placed thousands of ads for AI clothing-removal tools across Facebook and Instagram.

Put together, this is what content moderation actually looks like at scale. A real rule exists. A real ban exists. And between the two sits a gap wide enough for hundreds of violating ads to run before anyone outside the company noticed. Writing the rule was never the hard part. Enforcing it against a tool that can be repackaged and re-uploaded faster than it gets taken down is.
